Indians Dominate Tigers 42-16, Move to 2-0

TALLASSEE, Ala. — Wetumpka High School defeated Tallassee 42-16 on Friday night, showcasing a potent offense and a formidable defense to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2022.

The Indians utilized a balanced offensive attack, with six players contributing touchdowns. Wetumpka's defense was equally disruptive, consistently putting Tallassee behind the chains and preventing any sustained offensive rhythm.

The defensive tone was set early when Zion Robinson sacked Tallassee quarterback Trent Morris on the Tigers' first offensive snap. After forcing a punt, Quarterback Charlie Skipper made an explosive play with a 47-yard run on the Indians' first offensive snap, although the drive ended with a missed field goal.

Wetumpka capitalized on a fumble recovery by Jordan Bracy, allowing Jordan Smoke to score on a 26-yard touchdown run, giving the Indians a 6-0 lead after a failed two-point conversion early in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Wetumpka began to pull away. Following a strong punt return, Deon Floyd rushed for 37 yards before scoring on a direct snap, extending the lead to 14-0 after Karsen Tate converted the two-point attempt. Skipper then connected with Kaleb Ballard for a 7-yard touchdown, making it 20-0.

Tallassee responded with a kickoff return for a touchdown, narrowing the gap to 20-7. However, Wetumpka quickly answered, driving down the field and finishing with a touchdown run by Jordan Hill, followed by a two-point conversion from Christian Wilkes, bringing the score to 28-7.

Tallassee added a field goal before halftime, but the Indians maintained control with a 28-10 lead.

The Indias scored coming out of the half, as Skipper found Patrick Davis for a 36-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 35-10. Robinson continued to dominate defensively, recording multiple tackles and a sack that thwarted Tallassee's attempts to mount a comeback.

Wetumpka capped off the scoring with another touchdown from Tate, who fought through defenders for an 8-yard score, extending the Indians lead 42-10.

Tallassee scored a touchdown late in the 4th quarter to finalize the score at 42-16. The 7-yard passing touchdown was the first touchdown allowed by Wetumpka's defense all season.

Tate led the ground game with 89 yards and a touchdown, while Floyd added 72 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. Skipper completed 7 of 13 passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns, demonstrating efficiency when called upon.

Defensively, Robinson stood out with 6 tackles, 3 sacks, and an interception returned for 48 yards. Cooper Wilson led the team with 15 total tackles, contributing significantly to Wetumpka's defensive success.

Despite the victory, head coach Bear Woods noted areas for improvement, including penalties and ball security. Nevertheless, Wetumpka's performance was strong enough to secure the win and maintain their unbeaten status.

The Indians will open region play next week at home against Rehobeth. The game will be broadcast on 105.1 WRFS and the Wetumpka Sports Network, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 PM followed by kickoff at 7:00.
